I have an item on Craigslist and I got a response to my ad today. They asked if I still had it. I told them I did. This was the response.
“Thanks for the prompt response i want you to know that am okay with
the condition of the item and i will love to make an instant purchase.
I will be mailing (overnight) a certified check from my account to
cover the cost, while you hold item on my behalf, am willing to givean
extra $20 for you to hold item till you receive payment. Once you have
payment, I will have my handler come for pickup at your place as
soon as check clears your bank. I will be needing the
followinginformation to issue out the payment . .1.Name to be on the check
2.Home Address
3.Telephone** Please note that the payment will be mailed overnight via the
courier to your address and its bound to delivered within 2 to 3 days.
I am okay with the condition of the item and am very satisfied i
really need this and would appreciates that you help hold this for me
till the payment arrives.Furthermore do remove the posting from
CRAIGSLIST as am definitely buying it from you. Hope to hear from you
ASAP.”I hate to be distrustful, put this doesn’t sound quite right to me. One thing I should have done was specify Paypal as method of payment. I’m thinking of telling them I only except Paypal and will arange pickup at neutral site. Any thoughts?
October 23, 2012 at 4:52 am #887922I wouldn’t trust it a bit.
The english is off. A lot of people can’t type worth a darn, but it’s not lazy native-speaker errors, but the excessive politeness paired with odd errors like ‘appreciates’, the vague reference to his ‘handler’, and not once does he refer to what your ‘item’ is. It’s probably a form letter sent to many.
Telling him to do something anatomically impossible may open your Email to spam, but in your shoes, I’d both ignore and report him to Craigslist.
Please don’t feel bad about feeling distrustful, your instinct seems good.
October 23, 2012 at 5:08 am #887923I would be extremely leery as well, and probably wouldn’t pay it any attention.. as mentioned, the english is off (Not saying everyone with broken english isn’t trust worthy! lol. Its the mix of the english with the whole general *feel* of the message that I don’t trust), and I wouldn’t trust someone on Craigslist with my house address… (I’m extremely untrusting to people online, lol)
I’d take the better safe than sorry route with it, personally
October 23, 2012 at 5:10 am #887924Seems off to me. Why mail out a certified check only to pick up the item in person? I would think it would be easier to trade the check for the item in person since certifying the check means it’s guaranteed to clear.
October 23, 2012 at 5:13 am #887925When I was searching for apartments I went through craigslist and got a lot of weird replies worded a lot like that. If you’re giving out your address or bank information at all, then I’d say it’s a scam for sure. It reads like one of those sketchy nigerian prince emails.
October 23, 2012 at 7:23 am #887928Scam. It’s a generic response (they never say what the item is, only “item”) to get info from you.
October 23, 2012 at 11:31 am #887929Thanks guys. You all confirmed how I was feeling about this. Maybe I’ll insisit on Paypal and arange pick up at the local police station. 🙂
October 23, 2012 at 3:18 pm #887935Yeah that whole thing seems funky, and with all the identity theft, I would NOT risk it. Plus he wants to meet u to get the item? No, that sounds very scary, you don’t know this person and who knows what he could do, ya know? That and he wants ur phone, address, and name? I wouldn’t at all. He could look u up and open a credit card with your name. Its not safe out there. Ignore this person, he could be very dangerous. I agree with everyone on here, don’t trust it. My grandma had her card flaggged because someone tried to steal her account and ever since that, I have been careful myself on where to use my card and I ONLY trust paypal. If someone doesn’t except that, I will not purchase from them. I’m glad u decided to get opinions cause if u hadnt, and had done the transaction, it wouldn’t have been good. Just tell this person u only accept paypal and if he isn’t willing to do that for you, tell him sorry but I cannot sell this item to you. best wishes 🙂
