So the AC in my car doesn’t work. I took it to a shop, and they said the compressor is leaking and recommended replacing it. (and then gave me a $1,000 estimte O.O) I thought I could save $875 they were charging for an AC Delco compressor by bringing in my own part. I found one on ebay for $129.99 with free shipping and bought it. Well, long story short, my car died-ironically it died AT an auto mechanic. So I spent another $220 replacing the ignition switch, instead of getting the AC fixed. While the car was there at the shop, I told them the AC wasn’t working and asked them to look at it. The owner of the shop told me he ran a test with some kind of dye and basically said he couldn’t find an actual leak-that the compressor was “seeping” like a glass of cold water sweats on a hot day-but that he’d fill it up with freon and if it blew cold for longer than 2 weeks, that the leak would be so tiny it would be hard to find. So another $100 in freon later, my AC works!!! Which is fantastic because the heat is already unbearable-and the car has black leather so its even HOTTER inside.

      SO……..

I figure I’ll return the compressor and get my $129.99 back. I contacted the person/company I bought it from on ebay and told him I wanted to return it. He’s telling me that even though there was free shipping in the auction, since Im returning it, I have to pay the shipping that HE had to pay-which was about $15. AND I have to pay return shipping-which I can either pay at UPS, or he can send me a prepaid label since they get discounts with UPS, but either way, it will cost me $12.

So all in all, he says I can return the compressor, but he’ll only refund $102.99, I’m out $27.

This doesn’t seem fair to me that I have to pay for shipping the item to me when shipping was free in the first place. I understand paying return shipping. Can I file a claim with paypal to get my full refund back? Does anyone know what I can do about it?

      Should I….
1.) Keep the compressor. Maybe I could use it later (although I could use the funds more now)
2.) Try to sell the compressor on craigslist
      3.) ????

Here is the original listing. The seller has increased the price as well.

Sorry, Wolfen, but I agree with the seller. I don’t know the official eBay policy on this, but I don’t think the seller should be out the shipping fees because you changed your mind. There is nothing wrong with the item; if it was defective, or not as described, it would be a different matter. Most eBay sellers will not even take an item back for “buyer’s remorse.” It was also quite nice of the seller to offer the prepaid label to give you their discounted shipping price; they did not have to do that.

You have been getting conflicting fixes and diagnoses on your AC problem, so who knows if it really is fixed, or how long it will stay fixed? Cars are notorious for repairs that didn’t work. I don’t want to rain on you, but I think I would hang onto that compressor for a while before reselling it.

I agree that you should hold onto it for a bit. As far as the seller and shipping, I think he should have more properly called it a restocking fee or something like that. But, certainly, he shouldn’t lose money because he shipped it for free and is willing to allow you to return it.

Well from personal experience, I once sold an item on ebay, and allowed returns. The buyer filed a claim with paypal and got 100% of their money back, shipping fees and all-so I figured thats the way it was supposed to be. I was out the money to ship to them, and that was that.

In my opinion, if you can afford to say “free shipping” on an item, then you’re either paying out of your pocket or increasing the price of the item to account for the actual shipping costs. As a buyer, I dont feel I should lose money for returning an item. *shrug* But I dont know the policies on this and thus why I’m asking for anyone’s opinion.

I agree with you Wolfen Machine . People should not say one thing then change it . Thats unfar . I don’t deal with ebay . In all fairness he should have added that . Free shipping one way only . That was what he should have put in .
