Not a big deal to some of y’all folks, I know, but I’ll be taking my first commercial flight in January.
How in the hell am I going to navigate the airport? XP
Just look at signs. Airports are usually easy and if you get lost ask.
Usually the gates go from 1 to whatever the farther down the concourse. So if you land at gate 10…follow the crowd getting off the plane. They are all headed toward gate 1 and the hub of the airport.
Think of it as a big X. The center is the check in, luggage, etc and there are hallways stretching off the center. You get out of the plane in a big hallway and move toward the center to get a cab, get your luggage, etc.
It is easier than navigating the freeway! Good Luck!
PS Have an alcoholic drink on the plane…it gets easier if you aren’t nervous!
*laughs* I’m leaving from St Louis and arriving at San Jose CA. I have outgrown my shyness so I’m OK with stopping someone and asking questions.
It’s probably slightly more complicated than the train though. At the train station in Champaign all you do is wait on the platform. Simple. ;D
I’m sure I’ll be fine, but I’m just a country nut, I can’t help those crowd phobic moments.

That is excellent, those are smaller airports. Easy, all laid out in an x shapped pattern, or similar.
The bad airports are Chicago, Dallas, LA…they are all an endless maze. In general, remember the hub and spoke concept. The hub us the business center and the spokes are there to park the planes along.
Chicago is a psychadelic nightmare. They have tunnels with flat escalators and flashing pastel lighted walls with neon overheads pulsing and crazy tinkling music…..
Whoever designed O’hare was on an acid trip…last time I was there was almost 10 years ago…Thank God!

San Jose is pretty siple to navigate. Only 1 real way in and out. You should do fine. And keschete had a good idea, but I would start drinking before you board the plane. That way when you get stuck on teh runway waiting for clearance, you’re already in a good mood. 😈
Airports are not too bad so long as you have plenty of time to make any connecting flights! 😛 Having done the stiff-legged sprint from one end of LAX to the other (45 minutes is not enough time to do this with dignity), I’ve decided that a slightly longer layover is just fine. 😆 It’s a good idea to get to the airport early; two hours before flight departure is probably right given holiday crowding at the ‘port. Maybe a little more time than that. Airline security is super paranoid. And don’t do what I did, and leave your tiny slip’n’snip scissors in your backpack. My scissors are enjoying a permanent vacation in Hawaii now. Like even Hulk Hogan could have successfully threatened anybody with those things!
I have a layover in Colorado that’s about two hours, I think. That oughtta be plenty.
Someone did tell me once that Chicago was a mess and a half, or rather, an Evil Airport. I have my classmates and weirdo college teachers for simulating acid trips, I don’t need help from an airport. ;P
I took my first 2 yrs ago. It wasn’t so bad. I had a nice long layover too. 2 hrs. I found where I had to be for my connecting flight and then went to the bar and had a beer with a really cute Irish guy… 😈
I didn’t have a problem. I didn’t have a delay. But, I also was flying in the middle of summer… 🙂 I don’t know what the winter holds.
I did however give up my window seat in both directions to another person who wanted it. I’m scared poopless of hights! 😳 (But, I did look down on the tops of the clouds as I was told to do, and I have to say it was the most beautiful and spectacular thing I have ever seen.)Good luck. If you are heading out this way you should try and make a day trip to No Holywood to see the Windstone folks before they pack up and move well if you have time
I thought about it, but my friend is playing taxi, and it’s her wedding weekend. I doubt there’s going to be time, especially not for a five hour drive both ways!
I think all her business is in the other direction. It was a nice thought, though.
Not to worry, San Jose airport is easy! Heck, I remember it when it was teeny-weeny one runway and one little terminal building. Like others have said, there’s really only one way in and out. Have a great trip! 😀

It’ll be another month yet, but I’m sure I’ll have a good time and good luck.
I may make her take me to the beach for a few minutes though. Haven’t seen the ocean in 13 years. ;P Being stuck in the midwest has it’s disadvantages.
