Oh my goodness, I adore the typical doctor’s phrasing in this setting! Goodness knows doctors get pulled from the room all the time, but never quite with a rabies pole! (Although I daresay the staff have considered it from time to time.) This story arc is delightful, and this sequence in particular has been so much fun to read. 😆

“rabies pole”..ah, that’s what you call em? Our vet used that noose thing with some feral cats we had, but I didn’t know what it was called! I guess if he had called it a rabies pole, it would have freaked out the nice cat-ladies, like myself.
    Thank you for reading this!

  3. Rusti

Depends on where you learned it I guess. We always called it a ‘catch pole’.

Go Podge. 🙂 I hope she was out of the way when that door swung back!

The timeline looks like Kade could have opened the door. Panel 4 the rope is loose but the guard could still be hanging on to the end of the rope and the end of the pole. Panel 5 the guard’s hands are empty. Why did Kade leave the door closed?

  5. Adaneth

Hee hee I love that Poad!

Anyway, is it intentional that his horns seem to straighten out when he leaps out at the end there? I guess I imagined them hard like antlers, but that makes them seem flexible.

  6. Melody

His horns keep changing shape. Sloppy continuity on my part. -or I could call it artistic license
I’ll fix that when I get a chance. I schmarmed the leaping demon together at the last minute- then my computer died!

Kade anticipated correctly that he just had a split second to give the re-charger spark to the demon, before the guard nabbed him again.
Worked out well. While Kade is occupying the demon wranglers, Podge has plenty of time to work the latch open.

“Finishing up” in this case means to allow the demon to regain his freedom. Freedom is vital for healing a traumatized vel.
I was going to have the guard clutching the rabies pole with the rope slack, but he looked better with his hand on the ground.- plus it didn’t really make sense. He wouldn’t have let loose of the rope and not the pole also.

  8. etruscan

Yes, but as drawn it doesn’t look like Kade just has a split second.

Could you flip panels four and five – put the “I need backup” first? Or even put the “I gotta go” panel sixth, after “I need backup” and the backup guys en route and just before the demon swallows the spark.
Then the battle sounds in panel seven would indicate that backup had just arrived and grabbed Kade again.

  9. Melody

That was the order I had the panels in originally. I could put em back that way, maybe it would work better.

  10. Melody

Ok, I switched the panels around. I think it is better this way.

  11. etruscan

With the panels arranged this way it definitely looks like Kade has only a second before the guards grab him again. In my opinion, this is better. 🙂

I love the way the demon’s eyes change in the third row, from focused on the fight to watching Podge work the latch. Very clever details!

  13. Adaneth

I like both changes–panels work better in this order too! Now just have to wait 13 days…

It is amazing how little you need to show to get an idea across!

Oh my indeed, this is the imagery and colors I saw in my mind whenever I read Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea novels. Your art has rapidly become something that I could enjoy over, and over and never fail to be amazed at the details that I miss the first, second, or millionth time I read it.

  16. Melody

High complement!! Gosh, I wish I could take time to add MORE details to the artwork, I feel like I am always being sloppy and cutting corners.
I’ll have to read those books someday, we have them somewhere.
    Thank you so much!

  17. CHeMnICORn

Oh my gosh I love that last panel so much! That expression of glee combined with the pure ferocity of those teeth, and the fact that you can’t see his pupils, is quite scary!

  18. CHeMnICORn

I am curious… The “rabies pole” the first guard has looks very ‘normal,’ but the rope and net of the next two guards are very colorful indeed. Is this just because they are made from the local flora, or do they have any special properties? Or is that a ‘wait until the next page’ answer? Or maybe even “I just felt like it bugger off?”;-)

  19. etruscan

Now that you mention it … the color of the rabies pole rope changes. It is lavender-grey in the first panel and yellow-green in the sixth.

  20. twindragonsmum

That gleeful “I am sooo outa here!” galloping out… perfectly perfect. I love watching Podge to see just what she is capable of… kinda reminds me of a pair of little boys I used to know – think lots and lots of mischief *snerk!*

    tdm 🙂

The cord of the rabies pole is just supposed to be greyish, I have a lot of trouble with the color on my monitor not showing greenish hues very well so I didn’t notice it changed color. Now that I look at it on my office monitor, panel 6 is all a bit greenish.
The “net” is made out of nettuce, which grows wild. The thing that resembles a rope is a vine of the leafless grabberash, it only binds with its tendrils, unlike the shrub type that grabs with its leaves. It is best to avoid these plants while walking through the tanglian wilderness..
