So I was browsing around deviant-art looking at PYO Windstones, and seen a PYO Ki-Rin which had a longer horn. It extended backwards but had 2 spines to it, and was nobby looking at the base, giving it the appearance of real antler material. Was this production issue at one point, or did the painter somehow snag this horn themselves to attach it to the piece ? Cause is sure was nice, and I would love to be able to get a horn like that for a PYO Ki-Rin.

You can see the ki-rin in question here : http://swandog.deviantart.com/art/Paint-Your-Own-Windstone-Kirin-34459228

I browsed the comments to see if someone asked. They did. Her response:

I was told that mine was a sort-of “pre-edition”, and that the horn was changed afterwards, in the later editions that are now for sale…I much prefer the deer antler one on mine to the current ox-like horn on the others.

I believe that kirin has one of the oriental horns, maybe Melody’s original concept for the piece?

Photo from Melody’s Gallery and link to the page with discussion of the horn:

Thanks ! I had read down through some of the comments, but did not read back through them all. Thank you for doing this!

And thank you etruscan for the info and link… this is what Melody had to say on the matter in that link :

“Submitted by Melody on Fri, 07/21/2006 – 11:57am.
The final Kirins will have a normal, one pointed horn. I like him like this too, he reminds me of the dog in “How the Grinch stole Christmas” .But I decided to keep him consistant with the other kirins in the family, and give him a smooth horn. This one has an Oriental dragon horn, because his new sized kirin horn hadn’t been cast yet.”

I really like this oriental horn, and wish we had the option to get this πŸ™‚ It looks so realistic !

I had planned to make different, antler-type horns for the pyo kirins (and maybe the other kirins too) but the pewter horn issue around here persists…
… I still have hope though.

Oh, that would be so awesome ! *crosses fingers* What is the issue exactly? There isnt someone around who makes custom pewter pieces ?

I think half the issue is the gold plating which is why so many silver horned pieces are being seen now.

*EDIT: I Read the horn-shortage thread, and found some general answers. Guess its still an ongoing issue. Must be very frustrating for everyone at Windstone .

We just got a shipment of gold plated horns, but the plater said “these might not be good” -so there you go.
They look great, but we can’t use them if they MIGHT have horn rot.

is there any reasonable way to test them for horn rot other than age? Some way to mimic premature aging?

“Might not be good”?? Id ask for a refund then… it wouldnt be fair if you had to pay for something that you cannot use.

Just out of curiosity have you guys tried searching for a new horn caster/plater ? Or are you dedicated to the company you are with? I ask because Im sure us forum members would be eager to help if you needed people to search around for suitable companies that do this (ie in farther away places like here in Canada πŸ˜‰ ) We may not find anything, but you never know !

Actually Windstone casts their own horns and then send them out to be plated.

                          Ohh… good to know πŸ˜‰

See I had read this in the horn-shortage forum….

They own all the equipment to cast pewter horns, but unfortunately after years of outsourcing pewter and staffing changes, no one remains with the SKILL to cast the horns cleanly (without bubbles and gaps). Apparently pewter is pretty tricky to work with. They’ve tried pouring a few molds for other things and they haven’t come out very well.

But then I read further on today in that thread, and I do see that John said they were now casting their own horns again…. guess I would have known this if I had had the time to finish reading that thread last night, lol ! I will have to remind myself to read more before posting…. πŸ˜‰

No problem! I spend most of my time on the forum with my foot lodged firmly between my jaws LOL! My favorite goofup was posting my version of the birth of poads when Melody, of course, had already detailed it years ago (I was totally wrong)
