      Waahhh I’m super intimidated to be posting in here with all you talented people. I am definitely not as skilled. But, I did order a number of PYO pieces back in July and things are finally cool and dry enough, and *I* am now free enough, that I’ve started painting them, and I wanted to share my progress and stories of woe and heartbreak and joy and frustration as I have been learning through trial and error. I only have one piece completely finished, but there’s no reason I can’t post WIP stuff too right?

      Well anyway. Let’s get started!!!

      This is my first completed PYO, a foo pup that I lovingly refer to as “lichen butt.” I kind of had a fantasy forest-creature theme in mind when I was painting him. I wanted his fur to seem like bark, perhaps covered in moss, and the rest of his body to seem like sun-dappled leaves.

      My execution for this was not great. I was basically learning how the golden paints lay, and I was often too impatient to wait for things to properly dry before I started working on new stuff, and I just kept getting paint everywhere. I actually started over completely once, stripped all his paint off–and incidentally, I caused a chemical reaction in my kitchen that set off my gas detector and I was afraid to use my right burner on my stove top for over a month….. Whups.

      He was more frustrating than fun to paint because of all this, but I do feel kind of proud that I finished him despite his many imperfections. Some time, after I’ve gotten a bit better, I’d like to try this color scheme again. I think it was a cool idea and I just couldn’t quite nail it down.

      This li’l guy I’ve been referring to as Space Tiger. He’s not quite finished yet, though I’ve shown him with his eyes propped in (cuz eyeless pyos feel so creepy to me |D ) He’s been a lot of fun to paint! I feel like my shading is getting smoother and I’m better understanding about how long it takes for a coat of paint to dry before I can apply the next one.

      The one thing I’ve really struggled with him for some reason is his purple stripes–maybe it’s because I’ve been handling the statue too much, or perhaps Lumiere’s paint quality is just not as nice as golden, but I’ve been having some troubles getting the purple stripes to lay evenly. I’m also debating whether or not to try using antiquing on him when I’m finished, or if I just want to leave him comically bright (which has kind of been the whole point, but I feel like the lack of shading on his body might be a missed opportunity….

      And my last WIP at the moment.

      My green jay inspired griffon. I’m sloooowly building up his greens and yellows, but possibly not slowly enough. I find myself getting loads of paint all over myself again. I’m just having too much fun painting and don’t want to stop!! Anyway, I may end up doing some dark sections and gold spots along the wings to make it a bit more fanciful/less like the actual bird…. We’ll see. I still need to paint the dark parts on the head, neck, and beak, but I’m thinking of making it a very dark purplish blue instead of pure black.

          I really like the colors on “lichen butt”! I think all your pieces are coming out well. No one is ever perfect on the first try.

            From what I have seen (not having tackled any PYOs myself) painting these guys is always trial and error. πŸ™‚ Nice color schemes!

              Good job! I like the tiger one and I would say do not antique it if it already has stripes as any darker colour will go over the stripes and wreck the effect. Antiquing is not necessary unless you have plain colours with no patterns or stripes and want some contrast.

              Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!

                You seem to be making good progress to me, and you definitely have an eye for color… I love Lichen Butt! XD

                  Ah- I love these! I think they are very nicely done, and I’m looking forward to seeing the gryphon completed.
                  One thing about antiquing is, you don’t always have to do it in a darker existing color. Sometimes it’s different to antique with a bright color or something different. However I also agree with Kim, antiquing is not always necessary.

                      Stop selling yourself short!! Your doing a great job! I really love Lichen butts color scheme. It is such a pretty color balance and for a first piece your blending looks really good. Space tiger looks really cool and you have an orange on it I have been trying to master for months lol. Send me a tip on what color ya use for it if ya like :tongue:
                      Your green jay griffin is looking fantastic and I am looking forward to finished piece. The colors you’ve chosen are very intriguing.

                      Overall….BRAVO

                        Kudos to you! As someone who also just started in the PYO realm, I think you are doing great! Lichen Butt is awesome for a first piece! I love the bright colors on Space Tiger. And I can’t wait to see your green jay when he’s finished! I also have no patience for blending or waiting for stuff to dry, so I’m doing my stuff a la layers more than anything. I add gloss medium to my paints, but no retarder. That aspect intimidates me. I like immediate results, and then I just deal with what’s there. I’ve changed things after only three pieces, and my fourth will be really different than the others I think. Keep at it and enjoy yourself! I’ve been finding that it calms my brain and keeps the anxiety and negative thoughts away.

                        Love baby kirins, safari poads, mini keepers, and anything BLUE, BLUE, and, oh yes, BLUE.

                          I also think you’re doing fantastic! I love all of your work so far, Lichen Butt is really cute with a great colour scheme and Space Tiger is delightful to behold. I’m really looking forwards to seeing where you’re going with the nifty green griffin! πŸ˜€ I haven’t painted one yet and seriously, you’re making me really want to!

                            Wow I’m behind in responses!! Sorry guys, it’s been a busy week at work. XD; Thank you to everyone for all of your encouragement and kind comments, it really means a lot given the crowd it’s coming from!!

                            @etruscan
                            It really is. I think the last painting I did was either watercolors or oils, and that’s very different, so it’s been a bit of an adjustment. I’ll get there, I just have to be that dreaded p-word… patient! xD

                            @Kim
                            Thank you! Next time I’ll consider antiquing before I add the stripes, if I really want it. I definitely don’t want to lose the current effect now, though, so I think I’ll take your advice and leave it. πŸ™‚

                            Seriously high praise!! I would have spat my tea if I’d been drinking. Do you have any examples of antiquing with a bright color? I’ve never seen that in action and now I’m curious…

                            @Amstaff
                            I want him to be finished tooo… I had to work Sunday night and Monday night so I haven’t been able to work on him at all this week, it’s bumming me out seeing him all half painted on my table. But I worked really hard today and finished everything in advance so hopefully tonight I can work on him a little. I won’t be able to *finish*, but maybe this coming weekend since I have a long weekend it will be possible. *-*

                            @Branzyboo
                            For the orange I got, I used a drop of cadmium red and… three drops of yellow. I forget which yellow it is; I will look it up this evening when I get home after pet-sitting my friend’s cat. πŸ™‚

                            @MandBsMom
                            Waiting for things to dry is terrible; I actually started lichen in August and had to stop because the humidity here was so intense things were staying tacky way too long. Now it’s gotten cold and dry enough suddenly that I’m having the opposite problem; even my palette is drying out too fast. I’ve found that wrapping it in some plastic and using just a little bit of the retarder helps though. Other than that, I just add a plain medium to spread the color more; my gloss/varnish goes on afterward in a separate coat I paint on because I couldn’t get any of the sprays shipped to me and I couldn’t find any aerosol types in Japan. I agree with you 150% about it helping with anxiety and boredom; I have been so much happier and relaxed on the days that I’m able to paint that it’s kind of unreal. I’m going to be sad when I run out of things to paint, especially since the foxes *just* ran out in the store before I could buy one. /pouts

                            @Falcolf
                            Doooo iitttt it’s seriously a lot of fun. I mean that first bit of a learning curve where you’re trying to figure out every thing isn’t quite so great but once you get past the initial phase it’s a lot of fun and really relaxing. It helps me pass time I might otherwise be bored and terribly unproductive.

                                My first keeper was antiqued brightly… but I can’t find any pictures of him. He’s in my possession, but is packed in the closet along with the rest of my windstone collection… so I don’t know if I could find him easily. If I do, I’ll take a photo.
