Anybody have suggestions on the best glass enclosed curio cabinets for Windstones? I’m on the hunt for one (under $300), but I’m not sure what to look for. I have some heavier pieces like gargoyles and OW’s so it needs to be roomy and sturdy enough to house them.

Glass shelves vs. wooden shelves?
I don’t really have a source to suggest, but I would try to aim for wooden shelves. It seems most of the horror stories I have heard regarding breaking shelves have been about glass ones. (I cringe even writing about breaking shelves.)

After 2 – 3 separate horror stories I’ve heard and one that my mother has experienced regarding her teacup collection. I agree 100%. I would NOT use glass shelves. The very idea makes me shiver.

The shelves are wood and glass (framed in wood with small glass inserts) and I’ve had no issues with them. I tend to keep a look out for local sales or head to Goodwill/Salvation Army every so often, you can find some really good deals.
It is housing my entire peacock collection, some extra dragons, poads and assorted other goodies.
I found my curio cabinets on kijiji, one for $75 and one for $25 and you can look at Craig’s List too. Mine both have glass shelves and hold about 25 pounds of weight just fine but I only really collect smaller pieces anyway. I have a few big pieces I keep on the bottom of the cabinets or in my wooden bookcase. You can find cheap bookcases like Ikea style for around $20 online if you don’t need them enclosed with glass doors. Or if you want to buy new ones you can get them at Ikea with or without doors.

Thanks for the info everyone. Searching online (and the concerns over glass shelves), I’m wondering about getting a nice solid book shelf vs a curio. I was looking at curios because I live in a dusty climate and I’m tired of dusting every other day. The curios are so expensive though. Right now I have a junky particleboard bookshelf for my collections and it’s getting flimsy. Eeck! No luck on craiglist and every time I go to an estate sale the furniture is always sold! So many things to consider. The hunt is on!
If you are in the U.S. do you have kijiji for free classifieds online? That’s the best thing we have here in Canada. I see curio cabinets listed on there in my local area every week usually for under $200, sometimes under $100. They are good if you don’t like dusting but bookcases are good too if you don’t have animals that like knocking items off shelves.

Check out the Billy bookcases at Ikea. They come with glass doors as options.
You can use glass, but do check the load bearing on the shelves. If you buy new, you should be able to find it. I do have 2 glass cabinets, but only place pieces under a certain weight on them. Emps and OW always get a wooden shelf, and the glass shelves are house only 1 or 2 sculpts at a time.

I live in the U.S., but I’ve never heard of kijiji. Given the area I live, I doubt anyone else has either. I live in a small town far away from any major city so searching for furniture is a lot more difficult than it should be. I have a feeling it’s going to take a long time before I find what I’m looking for. Maybe I’ll just cave and buy online. However, when the day comes I finally find that magical piece of furniture worthy enough to hold Windstones, I’ll be sure to post a picture. :p
@ dragonmedley – Hmmm, haven’t though about IKEA. Thanks for the info. A bookcase with glass doors sounds more my speed than a curio.
Craigslist is tough to find things on; you just have to check regularly and be quick. If you think the item is really worth what they’re asking you can say you’re willing to pay that. Most people on CL lowball like crazy.

I also like peeking in to thrift shops. You definitely just have to get lucky but I’ve seen nice cases there.
I also ordered a custom curio shelf from an ebay seller called fwdisplay / Fine Wood Display and I gotta say he was AWESOME and the materials are very nice and sturdy. It’s more pricey but I have a shelf perfect for my Fledgies now, after giving up finding a ready-made one that would fit my weird specs.

There’s a few furniture stores in my town. None carry curios or bookcases with glass doors, oddly. I occasionally check the antique/junk stores. One of the stores has small, used, mass produced curios that are priced over what they originally cost. Another junk store has a lot of big furniture items, but most are really beaten and rotted. There were, however, two really nice solid wood curios with wood framed glass shelves for a good price. Of course they were already sold. My luck. Our local salvation army NEVER has anything nice, unbroken, or non-particleboard.
I have a family member checking craigslist regularly for curios. She lives in my state’s capitol, but still no luck so far.
Thanks for the link. I’ll check him out. 🙂 Sounds like a cool seller. Sometimes (maybe always) it’s worth springing the extra dough for quality, hand-made furniture.
You might want to check that stuff you need at calwells store in CA, the last time I visited them, they offer the same items you wanted.

also, if you have facebook, there are always local facebook fro sale pages you can join. i see a lot of curio type items up fro sale in my area.
