I thought it’d be fun to have a thread showing off cool horse colors/patterns that I we can find! I have toooons of horse color references for future painting purposes and just love finding new ones all the time, if you guys find any feel free to share!
Here’s a few to start us off!
Stetsonās Mr Blue, a chimera: A Chimera is a horse resulting from two fertilized embryos that merge very early in gestation. Such a horse may show traits in odd combinations that would be impossible from a normal single individual.
‘DA Remote Control’, I think her color is due to Somatic Mutation, there are tons of pics of her on Google. Cool thing is her other side has no white patches! She reminds me of a ice cream swirl!
A bay with grey/white brindling
This gorgeous friesian/appy foal eventually greyed out to look just like his mom.(Mystic Warrior)

I’m not really sure exactly what he is, some kind of few spot appy or snowflake appy, but he’s gorgeous!
This girl has had a really neat evolution of colors, Ava Minted Design, she started as this lil baby:

Ava minted design is actually black! Yup! Tested and proved. She’s an extreme example of how LP (leopard pattern gene) can ‘shift’ the base color and make it look like something else. Other black appys can have more of a bronze hue, but are still black.
Most of my reference pics I’ve gotten off the web or Facebook. Maybe I’ll load some up on photobucket and post em.Love baby kirins, safari poads, mini keepers, and anything BLUE, BLUE, and, oh yes, BLUE.

As for Ava minted, she really is an amazing color change example! Design sport horses really have a lot of nice horses in their stock. Here’s one of Ava’s foals, a beautiful black appy:

Had seen this article awhile ago with some incredible horses in it. The striking Akhal-Teke and the gorgeous silver dapple pinto are my faves. The last one pictured though, the paint with the word ‘horse’ across his side, is photoshopped.

I love the silver dapple too! His name is Austin if I’m remember correctly. lol, my mom sent me that ‘horse’ horse before and I sadly had to let her down by telling her it was faked.
Also, the #11 ‘silver buckskin’ Teke on that list is also a photoshop job. Pretty none the less!

I tried painting a Stablemate like this guy right here, but it didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted it. I’ve got plans to paint a PYO unicorn with reverse dapples to see if I can do it better next time around. Reverse dappling kind of reminds me of water reflections.
I can’t find a picture of the whole horse but here a tobiano with reverse dapples in the colored spots!
Donkey reverse dapples! And even better they appear slightly pinkish lol.

‘Bloody shoulder’, a large concentration of ‘flea bite’ hairs on grey horses. Usually found on Arabians.

Knabstruppers are gorgeous, too.
Blue roan gypsy vanner (fluffy things are fluffy)
And a fresian+gypsy vanner crossbreed that–while it has normal coloring–is ridiculously poofy
I asked around, people just call those weird spots Halo spots or ‘Peacock’ spots, which sounds fun!
Btw, Gypsy Vanners are so cute! So much fluff! When I was at Breyerfest a few years ago I filmed some gorgeous Vanners there, so many fluffehs!
(edit)Here’s a very shaky video I took of the Gypsy Vanners of ‘Villa Vanners’ from a few years ago! My favorite one is Taskin, the buckskin vanner! The blue roan, Pompeii, is gloriously fluffy! Mute the sound because all you can really hear is this loud fan in the background lol.
